Commonwealth of Nations

India joined the Commonwealth in 1947 as a republic, the first Asian member. India is the largest member by population and one of the largest financial contributors. The Commonwealth provides India with a platform for development cooperation, technical assistance, and promoting Commonwealth values among 56 member states. India hosts the Commonwealth of Learning headquarters in New Delhi.
